Keira Knightley embarrassed by Bend It Like Beckham title

Keira Knightley was so embarrassed by the title of her break-out movie Bend It Like Beckham that she begged producers to change the name.
The actress played a soccer loving teenager in the 2002 hit and admits she hated telling friends and family what movie she was shooting.
“I would say to people the name of the film I was doing was Bend It Like Beckham and people would say, ‘That sounds awful’, and it was really embarrassing,” she says. “Even when it was coming out I was like, ‘Oh God, can’t you change the name?'”
But the producers wouldn’t budge and the film became a “surprise” hit, as far as its leading lady is concerned.
Keira recently told PrideSource she’d like to revisit the characters from the movie and would be keen to examine the project’s secret lesbian storyline more closely.
Gay fans are convinced the film would have been an even bigger hit if her character Jules and Parminder Nagra’s Jess ended up together. Instead, she hooked up with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers’ soccer coach Joe, and over 16 years later, Keira still believes the film should have been a lesbian love story.
“That would’ve been amazing,” she told PrideSource. “I think they should’ve been (lesbians), too. I think that would’ve been great. We need a sequel.”
Following on from her success in the film, Keira went on to star in Pirates of the Caribbean, Atonement and Pride & Prejudice. She’s currently promoting her latest period drama Colette and fantasy film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
