See The Cast of ‘Hairspray’ Where Are They Now

Taylor Parks, Tayla Parx, Hairspray

Hairspray released in 2007 and it was met with a great amount of critical and financial success. It’s referred to as one of the most successful musicals of the last two decades and we know it’s one of our favorite musicals. The movie launched the career of a few of it’s stars, like lead Nikki Blonsky. What has the cast been up to over the last decade? See the cast of Hairspray where are they now!

Nikki Blonsky - Tracy Turnblad

Hairspray was Nikki Blonsky's breakout role. The movie was her film debut and she appeared to have a great career trajectory because of it, immediately appearing in the TV film Queen Sized and Harold. Shortly after she was on the show Huge and we thought she'd really started to pave the way for herself. However, in 2008 Nikki and her family got into an altercation with former ANTM contestant Bianca Golden and her family (leading to Golden's mother being hospitalized) in an airport waiting area. There was quite a bit of hearsay in the press, with some videos leaked, claiming both parties were throwing punches and racial slurs. Being such a new star, this kind of negative publicity didn't bode well for Nikki's career. She hasn't acted since 2013 appearing very briefly on Smash and in the film Geography Club. She got her cosmetology license in 2011. She recently got engaged and is a public speaker.
Zac Efron - Link Larkin

We don't need to tell you where Zac Efron is these days. Since his days of playing '60s heartthrob Link Larkin, Zac has continued to make a name for himself as a Hollywood heartthrob. He's shown his versatility, working on comedic films like 17 Again, That Awkward Moment, and Neighbors, while also taking more emotional roles like Charlie St. Cloud, The Lucky One, and The Paperboy. Recently, he pissed High School Musical fans around the world off when he didn't make it to the 10 year HSM reunion. But to be fair, he's currently working on Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Disaster Artist, and Baywatch, which are all set to be released in 2016-2017.
Amanda Bynes - Penny Pingleton

When Amanda Bynes appeared in Hairspray, she was pretty much at the top of her game. She had two Nickelodeon shows, What I Like About You, several films like She's The Man and What a Girl Wants all under her belt. She appeared in Sydney White the same year as Hairspray and then her career slowed a bit. In 2010, the year of her last film Easy A, she announced she was retiring from acting. She later took the statement back saying she was merely taking time off, but hasn't acted since. By 2012, Amanda was on a downhill slope, getting a DUI, later being charged for multiple hit and runs, and then having her license taken away. After that, it seemed to be one mess after the other, from legal issues, to odd behavior and drug possessions, to starting fire in a neighbor's driveway. In 2013 her parents had a brief conversatorship over her after she'd been held on a 72-hour psychiatry hold. The following year her troubles persisted, after she claimed then later denied (due to implants and voices in her head) that her father sexually abused her, all via Twitter. She had another psychiatry hold and since then she's apparently in school (she wants to be a fashion designer) and has been much quieter on Twitter. We're all rooting for Amanda to come back to acting one day!

Brittany Snow - Amber Von Tussle

Brittany Snow played a good popular girl we loved to hate in Hairspray. Since then, she's continued to work on TV and in films like Prom Night, The Vicious Kind, and but she really struck gold again as Chloe Beale in the hit musical Pitch Perfect. She reprised the role in Pitch Perfect 2 and will appear in Pitch Perfect 3. She is also the co-creator of the Love is Louder movement, a project dedicated to stop bullying in schools. In 2016 she'll appear in the films Late Bloomer, Bushwick, and The Potters.
Elijah Kelley - Seaweed

Elijah Kelley's career didn't immediately take off but he's steadily working his way through Hollywood. He was in Lee Daniel's The Butler, as teenage Charlie Gaines and then in Boys of Abu Ghraib. In 2015 he was in the film Strange Magic and then appeared as the Scarecrow in The Wiz Live (a role he totally rocked).
Taylor Parks - Little Inez

We need to say, Taylor Parks grew up FLAWLESS. She now goes by her stage name Tayla Parx. She's done a bit of acting over the last few years, appearing on True Jackson, VP, Bones, and Victorious. She's now a singer/songwriter and she's been involved in so much music, you might not have even know. She's gotten cuts on Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Derulo, Pentatonix, Mariah Carey, The Internet, Fifth Harmony, and Chris Brown. She has also written with various artists/producers including Leanne Rimes, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Meghan Trainor. You can listen to some of her music on her Soundcloud page!

James Marsden - Corny Collins
James Marsden, Hairspray
New Line Cinema via Everett Collection/WENN
Like most of the adults on this list, James Marsden was doing pretty great before Hairspray, though he did manage to lose his girl to Ryan Gosling in The Notebook. He's done a few family friendly films over the years like Enchanted, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Hop. He had an interesting role as Cam & Mitch's renter on Modern Family and Liz Lemon's love interest on 30 Rock. He worked with Elijah Kelley again in Lee Daniel's The Butler, where he portrayed President John F. Kennedy. We can look forward to seeing him on TV on Westworld and in the film Henchmen.
Queen Latifah - Motormouth Maybelle

Really though, we do not need to tell you what Queen Latifah is up to these days. She has been in the business, reigning as Queen obviously, for decades. Her work in music, film, and television has earned her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, a Grammy Award, six additional Grammy nominations, three Emmy Award nominations (with one win as producer) and an Academy Award nomination. Her most recent accomplishment is picking up a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role of Bessie Smith in the HBO TV film Bessie, which she was the executive producer for. Along with Elijah Kelley, she was in The Wiz Live, as The Wiz, because who else would she play?!
John Travolta - Edna Turnblad
John Travolta, Hairspray

Over the course of his career, John Travola has had many ups and downs, due to films failing at the box office and issues within his personal life. Post-Hairspray, his biggest career moment came from the 2014 Oscars when he incorrectly said Idina Menzel's name. His career might be on the uptick however, as he's currently receiving good reviews for portraying Robert Shapiro in the FX hit American Crime Story, based on the OJ Simpson trial.

Christopher Walken - Wilmer Turnblad

If we had a pick a favorite person in Hairspray, it was definitely Christopher Walken. He played the clueless but loving father and husband so well. Like a few of his costars from this film, he went on to do a live TV performance of a popular musical (it's all the rage right now); he portrayed Captain Hook in Peter Pan Live. In 2016 he's taking on another Disney classic, providing the voice of King Louie in the live-action version of The Jungle Book.
Michelle Pfeiffer - Velma Von Tussle
Michelle Pfeiffer, Hairspray
New Line Cinema via Everett Collection/WENN
In Hairspray she was Miss Baltimore Crabs, but in real life Michelle was Miss Orange County in 1978! She reunited with Zac Efron for New Year's Eve; their storyline in the celebrity packed film was a bit risqué. She's been living a quieter life, having had a very successful career in the '80s and '90s, but recently appeared in The Family with Robert De Niro. She's set to appear in The Wizard of Lies and Beat-up Little Seagull in 2016.
