In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss boldly claimed that the upcoming season six of GoT would be the best one yet.
Previous seasons of the show have suffered from a lack of consistency with some amazing episodes (Hardhome) mixed in with some not so amazing episodes (anything with the Sand Snakes). But when asked about his favorite episode this season, Benioff answered “the whole season.”
“Dan and I talk about this a lot. This is not us trying to hype it. Usually there’s an episode or two we’re kind of nervous about, that didn’t turn out as well as we hoped. This season there is not a weak episode. We had great directors who knew what they were doing, paired with excellent [directors of photography]. We thought at the script stage it might be our strongest season. Then the episodes came in better than we hoped. We’re always reluctant to say it’s ‘the best season yet’ because so much of that is in the eyes of the beholder. And Dan and I are so close to it that it’s impossible to be unbiased. But that’s my sense – watching them all together now, this is the best one we’ve done. It’s also the one I’m proudest of, because it was the hardest.”
Cynical fans might be quick to point out that showrunners are prone to overhyping their own creations. Benioff and Weiss made a similar prediction about season four, but they actually gave a measured opinion about the relatively disappointing season five, claiming it gave them nightmares (to be fair, the Sansa storyline gave us nightmares as well).
However, if the internet is to be believed, season six should be the best one yet. With April right around the corner, fan theories have been getting more action than a Dothraki wedding. According to our favorite theories, Game of Thrones fans can look forward to a resurrected Jon Snow, a time traveling Bran Stark, and a sober Tyrion Lannister (okay we admit that last one is a bit of a stretch).
Game of Thrones returns April 24th.
